Conocarpus erectus, also known as buttonwood, is a hardy evergreen tree native to Florida, the Caribbean, and South America.

    Benefits:

    • Conocarpus erectus is highly tolerant of salt water, making it an ideal tree for coastal planting. It can even survive temperatures of 15°F for short periods of time.
    • The tree’s strong wood was formerly used for firewood, cabinetwork, and charcoal making.

    Care:

    1. Soil and Sunlight: Conocarpus erectus performs best in full sun in clay to sandy, dry to wet soils. It is highly drought tolerant and can tolerate frequent inundation, salt spray, salty wind, and salty soil.
    2. Watering: Water the tree regularly to mimic the conditions of its damp natural environment. During the early stages of this plant’s life, it is important to keep the soil consistently moist to encourage root development.
    3. Fertilization: Fertilize the tree regularly with a bonsai fertilizer. Studies have shown that proper fertilization helps correct deficiencies and prevent them in most soil types throughout Florida.
    4. Pruning: Clip and prune the tree on a regular basis to keep the leaves small. Prune roots to contain the size of the tree.
